Last time on Pokemon: Johto Quest! Emily obtained her third badge from Gym Leader Bugsy, a boy who delivered the worst puns in mankind’s history. Aiding in this victory was a Wooper who happily joined the team. His name? Benny, a name bestowed onto him by Emily. Eddy also took a major step in coming to terms with his past.
“Here you go dears,” Andy’s mother said, handing Emily and Eddy their own Bluk Berry pie slices before they departed from the house.
Emily grinned and her stomach felt like a shaken soda. “Wow! Thanks!”
Andy’s mother giggled. “Oh it was my pleasure. Also, you’re welcome here any time.”
“Awesome! Will there be pie next time?”
“There sure will.”
After their departure, a smoky aroma filled Emily’s nostrils as she inhaled, forcing her to stop dead in her tracks as she instantaneously thought of the man who fed Benny.
“Hey Eddy. You know that guy who said something about Union Cave?” Emily asked.
Eddy nodded.
“Do you think we should go there?”
Even though it was the cave where it all happened, he smiled and nodded.
The duo reached the entrance of the cave after a somewhat short walk down a dirt path. Emily carefully stepped inside. After examining her surroundings for just a moment, she popped out.
“Okay. No blue bat things,” said Emily.
Pools of water and dark-green stones resembling potless house plants were scattered around the interior of the cave. A gentle, rhythmic dripping of ceiling water echoed throughout. The duo halted for a moment. But not to admire the scenery. Instead, Eddy instructed Emily through various gestures on how to get to the cave’s exit.
The very second he finished, he smiled and hastily made his way there, with Emily putting her best foot forward to keep up. In Eddy’s eyes, there would be no second confrontation and there would be no second loss if he and Emily maintained their pace. For a while, he was correct.
But then, the duo froze, for a giant rock snake rocketed up from the ground and swallowed a poor Sandshrew whole just feet away from them. The holes on the rock snake’s body and the scar on its right cheek had mostly faded. But a small portion of its lower jaw appeared to be torn and its right eye socket was nothing but an empty black void. Its roar shook the cave when it landed.
There was a ringing in Emily and Eddy’s ears when it concluded. Emily shook and shoved her arm towards one of the Poke Balls on her belt. But Eddy gripped her wrist, all the while glaring at the rock snake. The same one that shattered the lives of him and everyone he knew.
He dashed in its direction, his hands bathed in a red glow. The rock snake’s eye gleamed and rocky slabs manifested up above them, tumbling down shortly after. Eddy jumped from slab to slab, ascending more and more towards the ceiling with each jump.
Within seconds of jumping from the last slab, Eddy dive bombed towards the rock snake’s head. But the rock snake jerked its head in Eddy’s direction and blasted a blue-green beam from its mouth. Eddy’s eyes shut and his teeth clenched, grunting as he was sent flying far away from the rock snake.
He slammed into a rock wall and his hands stopped glowing. But when he hit the ground, he didn’t stay down for long. Once more, his hands glowed and he charged at the rock snake, panting as he did so.
The rock snake roared. Then, it danced in a way that made its body resemble a tornado. Moments later, a mighty sandstorm filled the cave, reducing visibility to mere inches in front of Eddy. But even with little visibility and Eddy coughing relentlessly, his pace didn’t slow.
“Eddy, do you need me to use this?” Emily shouted as she held up a purple spray bottle.
A disapproving grunt was the only answer he gave her.
The end of the rock snake’s body became encased in a silver glow. Then, it leaped, whipping the end of its body at Eddy the moment he was inches away. Eddy jumped, the end of the rock snake’s body grazing the bottom of his feet.
He pounded his fist three times into the rock snake with great speed. Tiny pieces of its body flew away like sparks. Deep cracks formed when Eddy finished.
The rock snake released a pained roar as it fell to its side and rolled. But, within the blink of an eye, it regained its balance. Its teeth were clenched and its body burned.
A blue-green beam exploded from its mouth and Eddy dove out of its path. He sprinted around the rock snake in a spiral pattern as the beam followed just inches behind. Eddy pounced onto the rock snake’s body moments later, climbing higher and high as though it were a tree trunk.
The rock snake quaked and growled, trying ever so hard to fling him off. But Eddy’s grip never loosened. That was, until he approached the middle of its body when the quaking grew more violent. With that, Eddy raised a now glowing fist that harshly collided into the rock snake. He repeated the process two more times before the rock snake succeeded in shaking him off.
It panted slowly through its teeth and its heart felt constricted. It struggled to stand. Eddy leaped onto the rock snake, climbing as quick as a flash to the top. In mere moments, he reached its neck.
Eddy looked at it straight in the eye. A single tear fell from it. But Eddy didn’t shed any tears for the rock snake. Instead, his hands glowed once more he delivered his strongest punch yet to its neck. The head detached and spun through the air like a top in zero gravity.
“Woah!” Emily screamed, hopping onto a nearby plateau and nearly avoiding a collision with it.
After a few bounces on the ground, the head landed. The eye was fogged like a window on a rainy day. Eddy smirked and sprinted to Emily, white sparks repeatedly flying from his body.
He flipped onto the plateau and repeatedly pointed to the spray bottle in Emily’s hand. Emily sprayed him with it and his wounds disappeared within a matter of seconds. Emily tried to say something, but stopped when Eddy grabbed her hand and jumped off the plateau.
Then, the sparks stopped. Eddy’s entire body became bathed in a white glow. Emily shut her eyes, then opened them moments later.
Even though Eddy had only grown two feet in height, he seemed like a giant to Emily. He was completely devoid of wool. His belly was white while the rest of his body was now a light purple color. Black stripes wrapped around his ears, neck, and tip of his tail and flippers have replaced his hands. The bulb at the end of his tail was blue and a gem of the same color resided in the middle of his forehead.
Various items were piled around his feet. Before Emily could ask any sort of question, he marched over to the head and climbed atop it. He took a deep breath in. Then, he looked at the ceiling and belted out a deep, proud bleat. When it was all over, the cave was silent and nothing dared to break it. Not even the water clinging to the tip of the stalactites.
When Eddy returned to the pile, he scooped up a necklace with a small magnet at the end. He repeatedly beat it against his body, wondering why it wasn’t going inside. Then, he looked down. There was no more wool to put it in. He sighed.
“Do you need help putting that on?” Emily asked.
Eddy chuckled, knowing full well how necklaces worked, but handed it to her anyway. She grunted, her arms outwards as much as possible towards Eddy’s neck. But they don’t reach. Eddy lifts her up and she places it around his neck.
At that moment, he likened himself to those being awarded medals at a ceremony for being the bravest and boldest around. Then, he hugged Emily tightly, grinning and teetering on the edge of tears.
Though he may have destroyed the rock snake that turned his world upside down, he remembered that it was Emily who got him there. After Emily picked up the pile of items and placed them in her bag, Eddy lifted her up once again, sat her down on his shoulders, and proceeded to the exit.
Eddy’s greatest demon is slain, bringing a new age of fearlessness and peace for him. But will this be enough for the other obstacles ahead? Find out next time on Pokemon: Johto Quest!
